Manual Handling of Loads
Some sectors of activity, such as BTP (Construction) and the food industry, are more exposed to the manual handling of loads than others. However, it is a common activity for many workers, and when performed improperly, it poses significant risks. Proper conditions are crucial to avoiding harm regarding workers' health and safety.
What are the risks?
Improper manual handling of loads (e.g., failing to follow recommended postures and techniques) can result in:
- Simple fatigue and muscle pain,
- Long-term musculoskeletal disorders, which may lead to sick leave or chronic health conditions.
What does the law say?
In Luxembourg, the Grand Duchy’s Regulation of 4 November 1994 regarding minimal health and safety requirements for the manual handling of loads states:
- Article 3.1:
"The employer shall take appropriate organizational measures to avoid the need for manual handling of loads by workers."
- Article 3.2:
"Where the manual handling of loads could not be avoided, the employer shall take appropriate organizational measures to reduce the risks involved (...) during manual handling."
What measures should be taken?
To minimize or eliminate risks associated with the manual handling of loads, employers are encouraged to:
- Evaluate risks
Start by identifying the tasks that require manual handling and assess potential hazards.
- Use mechanical equipment
Where possible, replace manual handling with mechanical solutions such as:- Load-lifting machinery or trolleys to move heavy items.
- Improve work conditions
If manual handling cannot be avoided:- Redesign the workstation to optimize safety,
- Provide personal protective equipment (e.g., non-slip shoes to reduce the risk of falling),
- Train employees in safe handling techniques to reduce risk.
